Biography

Zen Master, Singer, Actor, Theater Director

An initiated diciple and a Dharma Heir of Gudo Waffu Nishijima Roshi in Japan, Soto Sect, the Dogen Sangha lineage.
June 2000 - received a Dharma Transmission.

 

A Laureate of "The World Peace Ambassador Award 2015" - Save The World Foundation.

Awarded a honoured life membership in the International Film and Television Research Center - The Asian Academy of Film and Television - New Delhi - India.

Was invited to sing for the United Nations in the
first annual United Nations' Holocaust Memorial Day - UNCC - Bangkok.

Was invited to sing in "The Taj Mahal Palace hotel" - Mumbai - India

​

2013 - 2015 Artistic director of the Israeli national contemporary theater festival. 

​

2009 - 2013 Artistic director of "Testing Tools" - a multimedia festival - Tel-Aviv.

 

1995 - 1999 Founder and artisic director of "Theater in Slippers" festival - Tel-Aviv.

Conducted workshops on Buddhism creativity and meditation, and led retreats in Germany, India, Thailand, Japan, South-Korea, Nepal, The Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Belgium, Cambodia, Portugal and Israel.


Represented Israel as an actor, director, singer, and lecturer in Nepal, The Philippines, Australia, Fiji, Belgium, Cambodia, The Netherlands, The United Kingdom, Malta, Egypt, The United States of America, Canada, Puerto Rico, Samoa, Singapore, Brazil, Poland, Tanzania, Mauritius, Rwanda, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Senegal and Myanmar.



Editor and host of “Side Wind”, a program on philosophy and spirituality, and of “ Front Row”, a program  on theater on Kol Israel, the Israeli national radio station.

Directed the play “Interview” with the theater troop “The Left Bank” with whom he received first prize in the Arena International Theater Festival in Germany. Directed the play "Mein Kampf" by George Tabori which won the best director award and 3 best acting awards in the Israeli national festival for contemporary theater. Also directed among others: "The Balcony" by Jean Genet - Tel-Aviv, "Salome" by Oscar Wilde - Bombay, "Six Characters In Search Of An Author" by Luigi Pirandello and  "Woyzeck" by Georg Buchner - Madras, "Buddhist Bible 4" - Bangkok, "Five" - New Zealand, "A Room With Soft Light" - South Korea, "My Fado" - Lisbon, Portugal and "The Invisible Village" - Taipei, Taiwan.

Participated in the Butoh production "The Flower Of The Universe" - directed and performed by the world famous Japanease Butoh masters - Kazuo Ono and Yoshito Ono - Yokohama - Japan.


Acted in a broad repertoire of plays staged in Habima National Theater and in the city theaters of Haifa, Beer-Sheva and Jerusalem.

Hosted a popular TV game show called “Lingo” on the Israeli Channel 2, and “A Look At Opera” aired on the Israeli Discovery Channel.

A teacher for diction in the theater department - The university of Tel-Aviv.

Wrote the books: "Combinations" - poetry,  "Just A Moment" - a diary of a travel to the far east, "It Is What It Is" - Zen talks with Yo, and "The Journey's Poetry" - poetry.

Acted in Assi Dayan’s  two films , “Electric Blanket Syndrome” and “Mr. Baum”, in Raphael Rebibo's film "Amor", and in the Indian Bollywood movie "The Legend of Bhagadh Singh directed by Rajkumar Santoshi.

Released two CD albums, “Dream Alley” and “Gil Alon Sings Jacques Brel”.

 

Recently:
Acted in “On Tidy Endings” by Harvey Fierstein, sung in the musical “Assassins” by Stephen Sondheim, portrayed and sung Jacques Brel throughout the monodrama on his life, sung in the musical "Men of Mahagonny" by Kurt Weill in Germany, Participated as a Zen expert in the international project "Black Market for Useful Knowledge and Non-Knowledge" in Jaffa - Israel, and played the roles of the Father, the Writer, the Priest and the Homeless in the stage version of "Clockwork Orange". Also played the role of Heinrich Himmler in "From Crystal To Smoke" and the role of Hamlet in "Hamlet Machine" in Tel-Aviv.
